The Strait And The Narrow Way
by Dorsey Traw
"Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate,
and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction,
and many there be which go in thereat:
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way,
which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Beware of false prophets, which come unto you in sheep's clothing,
but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Ye shall know them by their fruits.
Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit;
but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit,
neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into
Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
Not every one that saith unto me Lord,
Lord shall enter into the kingdom of heaven;
but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord,
have we not prophesied in my name?
and in thy name have cast out devils,
and in thy name done many wonderful works?
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you:
depart from me, ye that work iniquity."
There are one of two paths that everyone in life is travelling. God has always
given us two roads with which to make our choices (Gen. 4:7; Deut. 30:19; Jer.
21:8). We have the choice to do good or evil. Our destinations depend upon which
choice we make.
I. ROAD THAT LEADS TO DESTRUCTION (Verse 13)
1. The wide gate and broad way
a. The majority is on this road
b. Destruction - eternal!
2. There are many travelling that road
II. ROAD THAT LEADS TO LIFE (Verse 14)
1. The strait gate and the narrow way. Strait = "narrow"; "difficult to be
entered"; "opening between high rocks"
2. There are few travelling that road
There are false teachers who are trying to get us to follow the broad way that
leads to destruction! (Verses 15-23).
1. Jesus warned us of them. - "Beware of false prophets"
2. Jesus said that they ought to be easy to recognize.
a. Not by their appearance (15)
b. Rather, by their fruits (16-20)
i. Corrupt tree brings forth evil fruit (17)
ii. Good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, vice-versa (18)
iii. Know them by their fruits (16,20)
3. Jesus said they may seem to be religious, but in reality are not right with
a. They call Jesus "Lord" (21).
b. They claim to do many wonderful things for Him (22)
c. However, they never really were known by Christ (23)
Since so many people are going the broad way that leads to destruction, we need
to be careful not to wind up on that road ourselves. One way we do that, is to
be led away from our good standing with God. Remember the words of Jesus,
"Beware of false prophets!"
