Trust In God To Provide

by Dorsey Traw

"Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat,
or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on.
Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap,
nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them.
Are ye not much better than they?
Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit to his stature?
And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field,
how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is,
and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you,
O ye of little faith?
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or,
Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek):
for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;
and all these things shall be added unto you.
Take therefore no thought for the morrow:
for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.
Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof."

Matthew 6:19-34

INTRODUCTION
All of us need the basic necessities of life. Jesus assures us that we will be taken care of by God. There are, however certain conditions which we must meet. They are two-fold: (1) seek first the kingdom of God (i.e. the church), and (2) His righteousness (all God requires of us). If we have these priorities in life, then God will take care of us.

I. WELL TAKEN CARE OF (Verses 25-33)
         1. Many of us have a great desire to be taken care of. If God has priority in our lives, we are firmly assured that                     He will take care of us.
                   a. We will have proper nourishment for the body (25-26)
                              i. Example - what we eat/drink (25)
ii. Illustration - the birds of the air(26)
iii. We are better (greatest of creation)
                   b. We will be able to clothe ourselves (25)
                            i. Example - lilies (28-30)
                           ii. God clothes His creation!
          2. God knows our needs! (32) Compare with Matt. 6: 8 - God knows "before we ask".
3. He will add these things to us if we put Him first in our life.

II. WORRY FREE (Verses 25-34)
         1. Many of us have a great desire to be worry free! Jesus says, "Take no thought" (25,31,34) for the necessities of life.
                 a. Not "don't think about it."
                 b. Rather, don't be anxious or worry about having the necessities.
         2. Does worry profit us??? (27)
                a.   No! (It is misleading to think that it does)
                b. We can't add anything to height by worry
                c.   Therefore, worry is of no profit!
        3. Advice - live for today (34)
               a.    Don't worry of tomorrow (it may never come).
               b. Today has enough of its own worry!!!

CONCLUSION
All this depends upon our putting God first. We can have the Father take good care of us. We can put our worries, anxieties in the hands of God. However, in order to do this, we must seek (1) the kingdom of God and (2) His righteousness. God will provide the necessities!
